STUDENT PROFILE

November 2009

Gene Imbody, 37
Kyu Kyu

Why did you begin martial arts training?

Studying ninjutsu is something I have always wanted to do, but never  realized it was actually possible and within a reasonable distance from  where I live.  My motivation to train  in martial arts in general was to get  in better shape, and when I looked into my options I found CNC.

Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?

I took a little Shotokan and Taekwondo as a kid, but not much.

What do you like the most about Ninjutsu?

I like the fact that it's sensible and adaptable, and that it covers a  wide range of skills. It's  not just about fighting, it's an entire  philosophy that teaches you to think, act, and plan  differently. You  learn how to not fight by developing skills to avoid and remove yourself  from dangerous situations. At the same time, you learn effective  techniques that prepare you to defend yourself in realistic scenarios.

What has been the greatest benefit from your training?

Getting in shape has been the best benefit for me. It's also a great  confidence builder to  learn a technique and be able to execute it  effectively.

What has been your biggest challenge?

I live in Athens, so for me it is easily the hour and a half trip through  rush hour traffic to get  to class! After class I'm always glad I did it  though. As far as ninjutsu itself goes, the  biggest challenge has been  ground fighting and joint locks. I had no previous experience  with either  of these before CNC.

What advice would you give to a new student?

Go slow! When learning new techniques it is important to get down the  motion first. Speed and power comes with experience.
