Glenn Davey, 38
9th Kyu

Why did you begin martial arts training?

I have always had an interest in martial arts training, but have never had the time to get involved due to other endeavors I was pursuing. Lately I have found myself with the time to dedicate to training, so I thought I’d start.

Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?

No.

What do you like the most about ninjutsu?

Ninjutsu is the full fighting package. You get striking skills, ground skills, weapons skills and escape and evasion techniques. Everything that you learn here is applicable in the real world.

What has been the greatest benefit from your training?

As a former wrestler, I have always been taught that being on your back is the worst place to be. Now having learned different ninjutsu techniques, I have realized that you can be on offense from just about any position in a fight – even from your back. In addition, I have been able to add the ninjutsu repertoire to my strong ground skills to be able to finish off my opponent more quickly – either by breaking something he owns or by putting him to sleep.

What has been your biggest challenge?

During the course of a fight, I still need to be able to recognize when there is a chance to apply a submission hold – especially where the lower body is concerned. Too often I will move to the head and bypass other openings that my opponent has left me. I am addressing this weakness by continuing to learn and continuing to spar so that soon everything will become instinctual and I won’t have to think about it – it will just happen naturally.

What would you say to someone who is considering ninjutsu training?

Ninjutsu is a great way to improve any aspect of your fighting game. If you are good at striking, ninjutsu will give you the ground skills you need. If you are good on the ground, ninjutsu gives you the confidence to fight someone who can’t be taken down easily.

Most of all however, the club has two great instructors who are willing to help with anything you need to learn. This in turn has led to having great students who will do the same. Everyone here helps everyone else learn – that is the best part of the training.
