Why did you begin martial arts training?
I always wanted to become actively involved in a martial art, but always seemed to be involved in other sports or other things that limited my time. I wanted to improve my self defense skills, conditioning, and wanted the overall challenge and discipline of studying a martial art.
Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?
None to speak of. I had a brother in Judo when we were young children; I took a few classes, but never really joined the club full time.
What do you like the most about Ninjutsu?
I like the diverse, well-rounded training and the fact that you never really get bored because you are always doing something new. Ninjutsu focuses on a variety of skills including striking, grapping, weapons training, and first aid. I also like the fact that many of the things we learn have evolved or been adapted for the modern world, making our training applicable in real world situations as opposed to more of an art form.
What has been the greatest benefit from your training?
I now feel much more confident in a self-defense situation.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Like anything new, there is a learning curve when first starting, and with Ninjutsu there is a wide variety of information to absorb. It is also a different form of conditioning which one has to get used to and like any contact sport; you are going to get some bumps and bruises.
What advice would you give to a new student?
I would say try a couple of classes or better yet commit to at least a month to get a real assessment of what Ninjutsu and the Columbus school are all about. The instructors are excellent and are very knowledgeable as well as approachable. We also have a great group of guys in the class which leads to camaraderie among the students. Everyone helps everyone. We work hard and have fun.
