STUDENT PROFILE

December 2009

Ericka Bruns, 29
Kyu Kyu

Why did you begin martial arts training?

I work in a fairly stressful field and my work involves doing for others on a constant basis. So, I wanted to do something for myself, something that would challenge me, be a good stress reliever, and be a good physical outlet. I had gotten caught up in the daily grind and wanted more. I played sports growing up and then I hit 25 and didn’t have that anymore. I figured I’d be creative and explore something new. This is something that is beyond just a hobby, it’s something I can use to protect myself if needed.

Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?

I just tried a few other places before making my decision on where I wanted to train. Other than that, I didn't have a bit of previous experience.

What do you like the most about Ninjutsu?

I like that I’m doing something that benefits me holistically; I feel better in every aspect after training. Also the environment; even though we are in there as individuals, we work together as a team to improve each other's skills. Everyone is very helpful and wants you to succeed.

What has been the greatest benefit from your training?

Feeling good has been the greatest benefit. I’m getting in better shape, I feel more confident and I look forward to going to class. It’s important to me to have a good mental and physical balance in my life and I feel like I have that.

What has been your biggest challenge?

For me it’s been getting over my fears. I was a little intimidated at first seeing randori (free fighting) and worried that I wouldn’t be able to compete. But now I’m looking forward to it because if I do have trouble, I know I will have help.

What advice would you give to a new student?

Just dive in and do it. You’ll be surprised what you are capable of doing.
