STUDENT PROFILE

December 2006

Gary Whitehair, 32
9th Kyu

Why did you begin martial arts training?

I’ve always been interested in the martial arts, but for many years now, neither the time nor the money was available to me.

Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?

Shorin Ryu Karate and very brief forays into both Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu and To-Shin Do.

What do you like the most about ninjutsu?

I’ve always been interested in the Ninja and their lifestyle. Their history, philosophies, and techniques are quite fascinating, even when you take away all the myths and Hollywood glamour. There is something very powerful about the Ninja and their will to persevere.

What has been the greatest benefit from your training?

Increased strength, agility and awareness as well as greater confidence and a strong feeling of accomplishment. It’s also very cool knowing that I’m a part of a tradition that has existed for over 900 years, and I hope that my participation and contributions will help keep that tradition alive for the future.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Digging down to find the hidden reserves of strength needed to keep going when my physical limits are being pushed.

What would you say to someone who is considering ninjutsu training?

It’s very tough, but the personal rewards are there if you have the will to keep playing. I can’t express how good it felt to get that first taste of success. Be sure to do your research and find the right school, but I'll give you a hint: I have been to a few and this one is the best, hands down.
