STUDENT PROFILE

August 2006

Ryan McClure, 32
9th Kyu

Why did you begin martial arts training?

I had always wanted to be involved in martial arts.  It was just a matter of finding which martial art was best suited for me.  I have been involved with high school, college, freestyle, and greco roman wrestling for 20 years (both competing, and coaching), so ninjutsu was the best fit for me.  The throws, ground, and grappling skills parallel with my knowledge of wrestling. Plus, the training aspect is a great workout for me, and is very similar to wrestling practice.

Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?

No martial arts training, just 20 years of wrestling experience.

What do you like the most about ninjutsu?

My exposure to joint locks has been very enlightening.  I have also learned a great deal about striking skills and blocks.

What has been the greatest benefit from your training?

The greatest benefit to me is the involvement in a new sport.  Not having competed in wrestling for over 7 years made me long for a new activity. Being involved in ninjutsu has given me a new challenge, and something to train for.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge has been "de-programming" my wrestling skills, and learning new grappling techniques.

What would you say to someone who is considering ninjutsu training?

Absolutely give it a try!  Even if it is not something you would do long term, it is an excellent form of exercise and conditioning!
