STUDENT PROFILE

April 2010

Eric Fete
7th Kyu

Why did you begin martial arts training?

I have always been fascinated with martial arts. As a long time athlete, I appreciate the physical aspects of the martial arts, ie, the skills and techniques, but also wanted to gain further insight into the mental and spiritual aspects of it as well. I also wanted to focus on practical self defense. In the world we live in, that has become quite important, especially having a family to take care of.

Did you have any previous martial arts training before joining CNC?

In college, I tried Tae Kwon Do for a few months. I studied Kenpo during medical school for 2-3 years. The school had an emphasis on self defense, and was well rounded. We incorporated kenpo, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, weapons, and ground fighting.

What do you like the most about Ninjutsu?

The practical, no-nonsense techniques. Get in, get the job done, and get out. I enjoy engaging in a variety of skills, from weapons, to ground fighting, to striking, and of course parkour! Ninjutsu, out of all the martial arts, has always interested me the most. Learning all the techniques unique to ninjutsu (stealth, deception, body movements, weapons, etc.) has been the most fun so far.

What has been the greatest benefit from your training?

Discipline and sharpness. By sharpness I mean physical and mental. I was in a rut in terms of exercises and working out. Learning new physical skills helps to keep me sharp and engaged. Learning foreign words and tactics hones the mental aspect; it's all connected.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Learning how to keep my head down and concentrate on finishing the ground techniques, not just getting control like I used to do when I wrestled.

What advice would you give to a new student?

Keep practicing, not only in class, but at home, and never be afraid to ask for help.
